The theme for today’s post is conquering your marketplace through sales.
To help you better understand the key elements of the sales process I started going through the catalog of the biggest sales I have ever made.

I’ve made a lot of sales, but what was the biggest?
Then it hit me!
It was selling this smart, elegant, loving and stunningly beautiful Brazilian woman to marry THIS crazy red headed guy.

The sales presentation I used on her is the same format you can use to sell most anything to anyone. Because trust me, it was a sale that was way above my head and pay grade.

In part two of our WOW Beginnings series, here’s a lesson I want to share with you:
Go back to being a bit naïve.

Just as Brian Wong, whom I interviewed on the December CD of SUCCESS Magazine, said it,

“Be willing to ask questions and be naïve.”

You see, I think the older, and seemingly wiser and more experienced we become, the more we THINK we need to know the answers to questions and problems. We use our “experience” to project answers.

The problem is our experience is from the past and the present is probably a very different reality from the past. The other problem is our experience is one-sided, meaning ONLY from our vantage point. We often forget that everyone else is seeing the world, and their problems, needs, hopes and desires through a completely different prism. WOW Beginnings (1 of 2)

In part 1 of this week’s series, I want to talk to you about WOW beginnings—businesses where young entrepreneurs hit it big early.

I want to share one such story with you.
One disclaimer however, I have a certain weakness for the business I am about to share with you…but more on that later.

In the summer of 1978 two friends, lets call them Cohen and Greenfield opened a makeshift ice cream parlor in an abandoned gas station in northern Vermont of all places.  Not perhaps you would think the most ideal location for to sell ice cream.

These two men didn’t start out to become ice cream makers.
They simply stumbled upon it.

The two had been friends since junior high school.
After college Cohen, who had dropped out of college, was trying to become a potter.
Greenfield was attempting to attend medical school.

Unfortunately for them both, and fortunately for the rest of the world, neither was having much luck.  Unhappy with their situations the two decided to team up and start a something together.

After a few considerations they landed on ice cream.
After taking a correspondence course on how to make ice cream and with a mere $12,000 – some from a loan and the rest scrounged together – Cohen and Greenfield were in business...CONTINUE READING

Today and here in the US we celebrate Veteran’s day, a day to honor those courageous souls who put their life on the lines in order to protect their country. Veterans serve not only as a shining example of bravery, but also of inspiration, which I want to address in this week’s post.

In a culture that is obsessed with measuring talent and ability, we often overlook the importance of inspiration.

Inspiration has the power to propel us from a life of apathy to one of infinite possibility.  It can transform the mundane into the magnificent.
Inspiration is a powerful force in our lives.

WOW Work Ethic

I want to ask you a few questions.

Do you take pride in your work?
Do you get up each and every day eager to get to work?
Do you give your all no matter what each and every day?

And the ultimate question, do you think others are WOWed by your work ethic?

Oh, I’m sure you think you work really hard.

You THINK you work long hours, but…. in a 2011 TED Talk Niall Ferguson, professor of business management at Harvard University described how the western culture (that’s you and your peeps) are losing its work ethic, particularly in comparison to most eastern cultures.  He cited a study that showed the number of hours worked in eastern countries was almost 1000 hours greater than those in western countries.

Ya, not a little bit more… ONE THOUSAND HOURS more!
Add to that… the research showed that the West has been progressively DROPPING in number of hours worked… since the 1950s.

This demonstrates that not only has our PRODUCTIVITY waned but that definitely our WORK ETHIC has as well… which usually go hand in hand anyway, right?

But what we need to be asking is why…

Muhammad Ali said, “In the big leagues everyone has ability. It always comes down to mind games. Who ever is more mentally strong—wins.”

Life is the “big leagues.”
And that quote is true about life and success.
Everyone has the ABILITY to succeed, but in the end it all comes down to mind games.

Whoever is more mentally strong will win, succeed, and live the life they were meant to live.

According to Peter Clough, a leading researcher on mental toughness, mentally tough individuals tend to be sociable, competitive in many situations, and have lower anxiety levels than others.

With a high sense of self-belief and an unshakeable faith that they control their own destiny, these individuals can remain relatively unaffected by competition or adversity.

Those sound like some qualities you’d probably like to be known for too, am I right?

WOW Productivity

Talk to almost anyone today, and they complain about having “no time.”
It is obviously a boast disguised as a complaint when you hear this.

Our most frequent response when we hear someone say how crazy-busy they are: “That’s a good problem to have” or even “Better than the opposite.” And it isn’t ER nurses, doctors or people with three different minimum wage jobs who say they are “crazy-busy.” It is people like you and me who are lamenting our own self-imposed busyness.

Being busy isn’t the problem; it’s what we are so busy with.

Face it, just because you are busy doesn’t mean you are achieving your most important goals. In fact it is probably the exact opposite.
Am I right?

You spend every day running around trying to get things done but when the day ends you stop and look at what you have accomplished and somehow it isn’t as much as you hoped or even thought you did.

Because being busy doesn’t equal being productive.

Being busy doesn’t equal being productive.

So why do we get stuck with mind-numbing busyness instead of productivity? I have talked with countless high-profile CEOs and millionaires, heck even billionaires. Not one of them has complained to me about how busy they are.

The reason?
Because while they are definitely busy they know how to take that busy and transform it into WOW productivity.

They know their limits.
They hone their skills and delegate the rest.

They are focused on getting the right things done, not getting everything done.

They know from experience what they need to do or not do in order to have WOW productivity and continue to build their million- or billion-dollar empires.

WOW Connections (Part 2 of 2)

Last week I shared an example of how Gary Vaynerchuk is able to make one-on-one connections and the impact it has on his community of over 1 million Twitter followers. Now it’s time to wrap up our learning from Part 1 of this series on how to create WOW connections.

First off, let’s assess: Are you a givermatcher or taker?

Don’t just assume you are a giver.
The reality is that most people are takers.
Trouble is they don’t even know it.

I’m not sure they could sleep at night if they really knew how much people view them as takers. I’m not saying YOU are, but I am asking you to ask. And be honest with yourself.
